Being a compulsive traveller, reaching out to far-flung wonderlands has been a second nature, a passion with me. Visiting these exotic places gives you a sense of fulfilment, a sense of wonder that keeps you young beyond your years. Kashmir and Switzerland were understandably my favourites…until I finally (and belatedly, I must confess) set a foot on that dream destination, Kerala!
The Sheer Diversity
Truly known as “God’s own country”, Kerala, the southern state of India boasts of such an amazing variety of attractions, so many striking places to see in Kerala, it just takes your breath away. You won’t be able to take your eyes off the beauty sprawled all around even for a moment, there’s so much to see, so much to absorb. The lush greenery, the enchanting rivers and beautiful blue lagoons, the magnificent waterfalls and the crisp clean air, the luscious tea plantations and endless paddy fields, (and you won’t believe it) the splendid hill stations like Munnar and Wayanad, and the amazing wildlife, and of course sparkling sand and the serene beaches, and who could forget the mesmerizing Kerala backwaters; Kerala is truly a real gift of the Almighty.
Once will never be Enough
Kerala has so much to offer, you would love to come back to the land of elephants again and again. Kochin, the queen of the Arabian sea, will welcome you with open arms. The tall coconut trees and the lovely rice paddies will lead you to a very modern city full of contemporary amenities. Kochin, the city of dreams! Now it’s up to you how you want to plan your vacation. Kerala is considered a gift of the Arabian Sea, and no wonder that the beauty of the gorgeous, exotic beaches like Kovalam, Cherai, Varkala, Bekal, Kappad will leave you open-mouthed in amazement!
Things to Explore in Kerala
The vivid colours of the state of Kerala, a narrow strip of land sandwiched between the western ghat mountains and the Arabian sea, give you infinite opportunities to indulge in so many diverse activities. Forget about the renowned Dal Lake shikaras, Kerala houseboats offer a delightful glimpse of beautiful blue lakes like Vembanad Lake and the exciting life around. The amazing mix of sun, sand, and sparkling emerald Kerala backwaters will keep you spellbound for days. The sunset at these world-famous beaches like Kovalam is going to be an unforgettable experience. If adventure is your cup of tea, the possibilities are endless- surfing, rafting, canoeing, scuba diving, snorkelling, the list just goes on!
Kerala will not cease to astonish you: if you want to tickle your taste buds, traditional Kerala foods and a variety of seafood await you; just don’t miss the Meen Curry, Kerala style fish curry cooked in fried coconut! The hill stations of Munnar and Wayanad with their exotic tea gardens and beautiful vegetation will be etched in your memory forever, you should try your hand at trekking here for sure. And before calling it a day, just don’t forget to indulge in some folk dancing, Kathakali and Mohiniyattam are the best known traditional forms of dance Kerala is famous for.
How to Reach?
Kerala is well connected to major countries around the world with its multiple Domestic & International airports. The biggest ones would be Cochin International Airport (Kochi), Trivandrum International Airport (Trivandrum), Calicut International Airport (Kozhikode). Its also well connected via Interstate buses and train systems for domestic travellers.
Currency & Cost of Living
Indian Rupees or INR is the widely accepted currency throughout India. For the latest conversions use the converter. India remains as one of the best value for money destinations across the globe and Kerala is no exception. You could easily roam around, eat, drink in under 30$ a day. There are accommodation options for every budget ranging from Ayurveda resorts to amazing hostels. I will cover some of my favourite places so stay tuned for that...
